Relationships and emotional balance

Still replaying what they said?

It is rarely about who was right. About 20 minutes of guided audio a day, and nothing to relive.

In short

  • Relationships and Emotional Balance is a Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming program from MindShift Mentors.
  • About 20 minutes of guided audio a day, recorded by Rob Edmonds, Strategic Psychotherapist.
  • It helps with the response that fires before you can catch it, not the argument itself.
  • You listen on your own. Nobody else has to be involved, and there is nothing to talk through.
  • Not clinical treatment. It does not replace your doctor or a relationship counsellor.

Sound familiar

If your emotions keep running the show, you are in the right place

You are not broken and you are not too much. The way you respond is a pattern your nervous system learned, and learned patterns can be unlearned.

  • You replay the conversation for hours, rewriting what you should have said.
  • A look, a tone or a message left on read, and you are flooded before you can catch it.
  • You snap at the people you love, then lie awake regretting it.
  • There is a voice listing everything you got wrong, and it never quite lets up.
  • You have bent to keep the peace for so long you cannot remember what you actually want.
  • You say yes when you mean no, then quietly resent it afterwards.
  • Things from years ago still shape how you react today.
  • Calm on the outside and churning underneath, then crashing the moment you are alone.

Left alone, the pattern does not soften on its own. It quietly wears on your relationships, your confidence and the way you feel about yourself. Most people have already spent years trying to think or talk their way out of it.

Why nothing has held

You have almost certainly tried most of this already

None of it is useless. It is just all aimed at the wrong layer.

  • Reading the books

You can name your attachment style with total accuracy and still react exactly the same way at seven on a Tuesday evening.

  • Promising yourself you will handle it better

The promise gets made by the calm version of you. The reaction belongs to a different one entirely.

  • Counting to ten

It buys a few seconds, which is genuinely worth having. The flood is usually already through by the time you get there.

  • Talking it out afterwards

Repair matters and it is worth doing. It does not stop the next one arriving down exactly the same track.

  • Walking away to cool off

Much better than the alternative. The thing that fired is still sitting there waiting when you come back.

  • Waiting for them to change

Sometimes they should. It still leaves the one part of this you can actually move completely untouched.

You were never too much, and trying harder to stay calm was never going to do it. The pattern runs below conscious thought, which is exactly where these sessions work.

Real people, real results

★★★★★

After years in the Justice Department and a long run of traumatic incidents, Damian started to see the quiet toll it was taking on him and on his family. If you have been holding it together for everyone else and nothing has shifted it, his is the one to watch.

Real people, real stories

What our clients say about all our sessions

Individual experiences vary. Testimonials describe individual experiences and do not guarantee that another person will achieve the same result.

What it actually is

How Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works

Traditional therapy tends to work on the story. This helps with what sits underneath it, where automatic habits and stress responses are actually formed.

Rob Edmonds explains the method, about six minutes

  1. It skips the conscious chatter

No going over the argument and no talking it through. The session helps with the response that fires long before any of your reasoning gets a turn.

  2. Nothing gets relived

You are not asked to go back into old hurt, which is why people who cannot face rehashing things can still do this.

  3. Nothing to practise in the daytime

Strategic Psychotherapy and behavioural science combined. The whole of it happens while you are listening, so there are no exercises to keep up and nothing to remember during the day.

The program is built around 21 days of listening, one session a day. What people notice, and when, varies a lot, and we make no promise about either. If you want the method in full, here is how Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works.

What is actually going on

Why you can be fine at work and unreachable at home

This is about the nervous system patterns that put distance between people who love each other. It is not couples therapy, and it is not the right tool if there is violence or coercive control in the picture. If that is your situation, 1800RESPECT is the number, and it is free, confidential and available at any hour.

The line we hear most often is a version of the same thing: I am not angry at them, I have got nothing left. That is worth taking literally. What looks from the outside like a caring problem is almost never one. It is a capacity problem, and capacity has mechanics.

Where do the feelings I shelved actually go?

Nowhere. Shelved emotions accumulate rather than fade.

  • Compartmentalising is a defence, and a good one. It isolates conflicting feelings so you can function through something that would otherwise overload you.
  • The trouble starts when the temporary arrangement becomes the permanent one.
  • The early leaks are easy to explain away. Restless nights, a shorter fuse than usual, concentration that is not what it was.
  • The wall is not selective. It blocks joy and closeness on the way through, which is why the distance at home is not a measure of how much you care.

Why is home harder than work?

A threat trained brain reads unpredictability as risk, and home is the unpredictable one.

  • If the brain has learned that staying alert equals staying safe, it keeps doing it until it gets clear, repeated signals that safety has arrived. It does not take your word for it.
  • Work is structured and predictable. Home is open, loud and unstructured.
  • Connection needs a felt sense of safety, so in threat mode the brain reaches for control instead of openness.
  • Which is how the people you love start registering as triggers.

Why does time off not fix it?

Rest is not the same as a safety signal.

  • Without structure the survival energy turns inward rather than switching off, which is why a fortnight away can leave you more irritable than when you left.
  • It is also why this often gets worse after retirement rather than better.
  • Distraction, alcohol and hard exercise all suppress the symptom without delivering the signal.
  • Alcohol does double damage. It breaks up sleep and raises the following day's baseline anxiety, so the thing reached for to take the edge off is putting the edge back on tomorrow.

Why do I feel nothing?

Numbness is not indifference. It is desensitisation.

  • Repeated exposure to high stakes situations desensitises the limbic system, and everyday pleasures stop registering at the level they used to.
  • The family reads that as disinterest. From the inside it is closer to nothing at all, which is harder to explain and harder to apologise for.
  • The brain habituates to adrenaline and cortisol, so ordinary calm can genuinely feel like boredom, or even like anxiety.
  • Dissociation is the freeze branch of fight, flight and freeze. Once the brain learns that checking out brings relief, it starts reaching for it during ordinary stress too.

What does this do to the children in the room?

Ongoing conflict between parents is one of the largest risk factors for how children adjust. Co-parenting that stays focused on the child is protective.

  • Suppressed grief and anger do not stay suppressed. They leak out later in ways nobody intends.
  • Guilt overload tends to produce permissive parenting, which quietly removes the structure children rely on to feel secure.
  • That is a hard fact to sit with mid separation, and the most useful one in this block.

What this program is, and what it is not

It helps with your side of it, not the relationship.

  • What it targets. The vigilance, the numbing, the self doubt, the emotional residue that arrives home with you.
  • In a relaxed state, with nothing to retell and nothing to relive.
  • Not couples counselling and not trauma treatment. Where there is trauma or dissociation in the picture it is designed to sit alongside a professional who works in that area rather than instead of one.

How the Mindshift Method fits

The Mindshift Method app can be used alongside appropriate medical, psychological or therapeutic care where required.

Naming it properly

Which of These Sounds Most Like What You’re Experiencing?

Eight common experiences, in plain language. They are not all the same thing, and they do not all need the same kind of support. Here is how to tell the difference, including where this pathway may help and where another form of support should come first.

  • Green · what the sessions are built around
  • Amber · may help with part of it, alongside other care
  • Red · not the right tool, start elsewhere
  • Emotional compartmentalisation

Boxing feelings away to get through the day, and then not being able to get the box open again. Useful in the moment, costly as a permanent setting.

The program is designed to support the recurring stress, worry and automatic response patterns around this experience, alongside trauma informed counselling where that is in play.

    More on compartmentalising

  • Hypervigilance at home

Sitting facing the door. Scanning a room you have been in a thousand times. Unable to relax in your own house because the system that kept you safe somewhere else has not been told it can stand down.

The program is designed to support the recurring thought and stress patterns around it. If it is severe, or tied to specific events you cannot think about, please work with a professional alongside it.

More on hypervigilance at home and where it starts

  • Role residue and identity loss

Still responding to now as though you were in the last environment that demanded vigilance, and not being sure who you are once that role ends. Common after leaving a service, a career or a long marriage.

Directly what the sessions help with.

  • Emotional numbing and dissociation

The checked out feeling. The freeze branch of the threat response, which the brain reaches for when it can neither fight nor escape, and then starts reaching for during ordinary stress.

The program helps with the stress driving it. If dissociation is frequent or you lose time, see a professional who works with it specifically.

    Signs of dissociation

  • Grief and loss

Including the kind that has no funeral: the end of a marriage, a career, a version of the future you had already planned for.

This complements grief support, it does not replace it, and grief has its own timeline that nobody gets to hurry.

    More on grief within separation

  • Separation and co-parenting stress

The ongoing negotiation with someone you are no longer with, over the people you both love most. Guilt tends to sit underneath it and quietly removes the structure children need.

The self regulation side is exactly this, and ongoing conflict between parents is worth taking seriously as its own risk.

    More on parenting after separation

  • Children struggling after a separation

Regression, clinginess, anger, withdrawal, or trouble at school in the months after a family changes shape.

Prolonged sadness, severe anxiety, aggression or any sign of self harm needs a child therapist, and it needs one now. This program is for the adult, and steadying the adult helps, and it is not treatment for a child who is struggling.

  • Self doubt and the voice in your head

The running commentary that got louder somewhere along the way, and now narrates every conversation before and after it happens.

There is a session for this specifically and it is one of the most used on the whole program.

If any part of this is about safety rather than distance, that is a different conversation and a more urgent one. 1800RESPECT is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day on 1800 737 732. If the nights are the part that has gone first, which is common with all of the above, the sleep program is included in the same subscription.

You do not have to explain it to anyone to start working on it.

Clearing it up

What this is not

Worth being straight about, because it gets confused with all four.

  • Not couples counselling

There is no session you sit through together and nobody mediates anything. This helps with your side of the pattern, which is inconvenient and also the only side you can actually move.

  • Not a way to stop feeling things

The aim is not a flat calm and it is not never being annoyed. It is the gap between the feeling arriving and you acting on it, because that gap is where the choice lives.

  • Not talk therapy

There is no session where you explain yourself, and nothing is asked of you. The Mindshift Method does not require you to explain or retell your story during the audio session. The sessions focus on present-day patterns and responses.

  • Not the right tool for a relationship that is not safe

If there is control, intimidation or violence in it, no audio session is the answer and none of this is your pattern to fix. 1800RESPECT is on 1800 737 732, free and open all day and all night.

This will not suit everyone

Here is who it tends to work for, and who should look elsewhere first.

It tends to suit you if

  • You react faster than you can think, then spend the night regretting it
  • The inner critic is louder than anyone else in your life
  • You keep the peace until there is nothing of you left in it
  • You want to change your side of it without waiting for anyone else
  • You would rather not go back over the past to move forward

It probably does not suit you if

  • You are looking for couples counselling or mediation
  • You want someone to tell you who is right
  • You want the cause explored rather than the response changed
  • You are not able to give it about 20 minutes most days
  • You are in a situation that is not safe, or you are in crisis

If there is control, intimidation or violence in your relationship, please start with 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 rather than with an app. And if things are bad right now, in Australia Lifeline is on 13 11 14 and the Suicide Call Back Service is on 1300 659 467, all free and all open all night. This work is designed for the long grind, not for an emergency.

The man behind the MindShift Method

One voice, every session in the library

Rob Edmonds, Strategic Psychotherapist and creator of Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming

Rob Edmonds

Strategic Psychotherapist

Accredited practitioner LIC#110226 · ISPA accredited · ASCH member

Rob was nineteen and could not speak in front of a room. Not nervous, genuinely unable, and it was costing him exams. He tried something he had run out of reasons not to try, and a few sessions sorted it. It worked in a way that annoyed him slightly, because it should not have been that straightforward. That quietly shaped everything after it.

He trained at the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney and went on to create Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming, part of the MindShift Method. He writes and voices every session in the library himself, and still sees clients one to one.

Relationships and Emotional Balance FAQs

What if the real problem is the other person?

Sometimes the other person is the problem, and this does not pretend otherwise. What these sessions help with is your side: the flood that arrives before you have decided anything, and what you do in the ten seconds after. That is the part you can move without anyone's permission, and moving it often changes what comes back at you.

Do we both have to do it, or can I do this on my own?

Doing this on your own is the normal way. Nobody else has to agree to anything, sign up to anything or even know you are doing it. Some couples end up doing it side by side later, but nothing here needs two people.

Will this make me passive, or stop me feeling things?

These sessions are not designed to flatten you out, and it would be a failure rather than a result if they did. The target is the gap between a feeling arriving and you acting on it. Wider gap, same feelings, and you get a say in what happens next instead of watching yourself do it again.

What about the voice that lists everything I got wrong?

Quiet the Inner Critic is the session for that. The critic often behaves more like a learned response than a fixed trait, and usually an old one. Reasoning with it does not work because it was never built out of reasoning in the first place.

Do I have to go back over what happened?

You do not have to go back over what happened, and that is deliberate. Letting Go of the Past and Returning to the Present is designed to help with the grip old hurt still has on today, not with the events themselves. You never have to describe any of it, to us or to anyone.

Can I use this while we are seeing a couples counsellor?

The Mindshift Method can be used while you are seeing a couples counsellor. It sits alongside professional care rather than in place of it, and plenty of people do both. It is a self help support tool, not a substitute for professional care, so if you are working with someone, keep working with them.

How long before the people around me notice?

Other people often notice before you do, because you are looking for a feeling and they are noticing a reaction that did not happen. This pathway is built around 21 days of listening, one session a day. Some people notice changes quickly while others find change develops more gradually. Individual experiences vary, and we cannot tell you in advance which you will be.

Can I use this while I am seeing a therapist?

The Mindshift Method can be used while you are seeing a therapist. It sits alongside other therapeutic care, and it is a self help support tool rather than a substitute for professional care. If you are working with someone on something serious, keep working with them.

What if I am not sure this is even my problem?

If you are not sure this is your problem, listen to the full session on this page before you decide anything, and take the seven free nights. No credit card is needed to start, so there is nothing to cancel if you conclude it is not for you. That is a cheaper way to find out than talking yourself into it.
