In short
- Habits, Behaviours and Lifestyle Change is a Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming program from MindShift Mentors.

- Not clinical treatment. It is designed to sit alongside your doctor or a support service, not to replace them.

Sound familiar
If you keep going back to the thing you swore you had quit, you are in the right place
You are not weak and you do not lack discipline. A habit is a pattern your brain learned to reach for, and learned patterns can be unlearned.
- You mean the Sunday night promise completely, and by Wednesday you are back in the loop.
- Your hand is on it before you have decided anything, glass, phone or packet.
- There is a hit of disappointment in yourself afterwards, every single time.
- You hold the line all day, then cave the moment you are tired or stressed.
- Apps, patches, cold turkey, bargains with yourself, and none of it has stuck.
- It is costing you money, health, time and the trust you used to have in yourself.
- One hard day and the old habit is right there waiting, exactly where you left it.
- The things that actually matter keep sliding while the habit holds firm.
Left alone, the loop does not loosen on its own. It quietly costs you your health, your money and your faith that you can change anything. Most people have already spent years, and a fair bit of cash, trying to force their way out of it.
Why nothing has held
You have almost certainly tried most of this already
None of it is useless. It is just all aimed at the wrong layer.
Going cold turkey
It works right up until the first genuinely bad day, and then the whole thing comes back with interest.
Apps, patches and trackers
Useful scaffolding around the edges. The pull itself is untouched, and it is still there when the scaffolding comes down.
Bargaining with yourself
Only on weekends, only after six, only when someone else is having one. The rules get renegotiated by the part of you that wants it.
Willpower
It is a finite thing and it runs out around four in the afternoon, which is almost exactly when you need it most.
Shaming yourself into it
Shame is the fuel for the loop, not the brake. Most people reach for the habit to get away from a feeling, and shame is a feeling.
Waiting to feel ready
Motivation is a feeling and feelings are not a plan. Nobody has ever felt ready on a wet Tuesday.
You were never weak, and trying harder was never going to break it. The habit runs below conscious thought, which is exactly where these sessions work.

Headphones help, and so does somewhere you will not be interrupted. This is also a decent thing to reach for when a craving turns up.
Whatever you noticed just then was your own doing. The session is only the way in.

A nightly routine that works
“As a nurse and mom, I needed better sleep. Mindshift Mentors’ recordings help me relax and sleep deeply.”

Sleeping 7-8 hours again
“After years of struggling, I’m now getting full nights of sleep. Only 10 days into the audio. Thank you!”

Asleep before it ends
“I love the Mindshift Mentor recordings. I have long suffered a busy mind especially at night when the worry demons invade. If I can quiet my mind I quickly fall back asleep. I have tried so many things, psychologists, warm milk before bed, sliced turkey haha, yoga, warm shower/bath, journaling - you name it. However what has really helped is listening to these soothing guided meditations - I don’t know if I have actually made it to the end of one! I simply play them on my ipad before the mind starts and I’m out of it. Such a great find and the small investment has a big payday when i jump out of bed and aren’t tired during the day!”

Waking up with a relaxed jaw
“I had developed a really bad habit of clenching and grinding my teeth at night, especially during stressful periods. It was affecting my sleep and starting to impact my mood and energy levels. My brother Callan told me about Mindshift Mentors, so I decided to try their audio sessions. I didn’t know what to expect, but Rob’s voice is so calm and grounding, and the sessions just clicked with me. After a few nights of listening, I noticed a huge difference. I was waking up with a relaxed jaw and sleeping more deeply. If you’re struggling with nighttime jaw tension, I can’t recommend Mindshift Mentors highly enough. It’s made such a difference in my life.”

Blown away by the difference
“I had been grinding my teeth in my sleep for years, and nothing seemed to help, not even the expensive mouthguards. I was constantly waking up with jaw pain and headaches. A friend recommended Mindshift Mentors, and I started listening to their audio sessions. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the very first audio, something shifted. The way Rob explains things just made sense, and the sessions helped me let go of the tension I didn’t even realise I was holding. Honestly, I’m blown away. This approach is unlike anything I’ve tried.”

Finally waking up refreshed
“Rob’s hypnotherapy actually worked! I now fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up refreshed.”

What it actually is
How Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works
Traditional therapy tends to work on the story. This works underneath it, where automatic habits and stress responses are actually formed.
Rob Edmonds explains the method, about six minutes
-
It skips the conscious chatter
No talking through why you do it. You already know why, and knowing has never once stopped your hand reaching for it.
-
Nothing gets relived
You are not asked to go back over every time you slipped or what it cost you. There is nothing to recount.
-
Nothing to practise in the daytime
Strategic Psychotherapy and behavioural science combined. The whole of it happens while you are listening, so there are no exercises to keep up and nothing to remember during the day.
The program is built around 21 days of listening, one session a day. What people notice, and when, varies a lot, and we make no promise about either. If you want the method in full, here is how Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works.

What is actually going on
Why you can mean it completely and still do it again on Thursday
A word before the rest. If you drink heavily every day, do not simply stop on your own, because withdrawal can be dangerous and sometimes needs medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or ring the National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline on 1800 250 015 first. Everything below assumes you have that part covered.
The story almost everybody tells themselves about a habit is a story about character. You meant it on Sunday, you broke it on Thursday, so the problem must be that you are weak. That story is worth dropping, and not to be kind. It points you at the wrong layer, and you can spend years applying more resolve to something that was never running on resolve.
Why can I not just stop?
The behaviour is not the problem. It is the solution to something else.
- Almost every habit worth breaking started out working. The drink, the bet, the cigarette, the phone, the third helping.
- Each one takes the edge off quickly and reliably, which is exactly what makes it stick.
- The nervous system is not being irrational. It has found something that produces relief on demand.
- What it has not found is a safety signal. Distraction, alcohol and hard exercise all suppress the feeling without telling the system underneath that the pressure has passed.
Why does it get worse the more I lean on it?
The relief arrives fast and the cost arrives later, which makes the two hard to connect.
- Avoidance behaves the same way. Stepping around the difficult thing brings genuine relief now and makes the next time harder, because nothing gets the chance to teach the brain it was survivable.
- Alcohol is the clearest example because the cost is measurable. It breaks up the back half of the night and lifts the following day's baseline anxiety.
- So the drink taken to settle tonight is part of why tomorrow feels worse, and tomorrow feeling worse is a reason to have one.
Why does stopping feel worse before it feels better?
The brain habituates to adrenaline and cortisol, so ordinary calm stops registering as calm.
- It registers as boredom, flatness, sometimes as anxiety.
- That is a deeply unpleasant surprise for someone who has just done a hard and correct thing.
- People routinely read it as evidence that stopping was a mistake. Knowing it is coming is most of the defence against it.
Is this harder if I have ADHD?
Yes, and it is the same system doing what it does, not a character flaw sitting on top.
- In the ADHD nervous system reward is processed differently.
- When the reward signal runs low the mind goes looking for the fastest available boost. The phone, sugar, a purchase, a bet.
- High spike, no lasting satisfaction, and the reach happens before any deciding does.
- The useful work is on the reaching, not the resolve. There is a whole program for that side of it.
What is usually underneath?
Shelved emotion and a stress response that never idles down. Most people have both.
- Emotions shelved to keep going accumulate rather than fade. The early signs are ordinary enough to miss: restless nights, a shorter fuse, concentration that has slipped.
- Repeated stress keeps fight or flight ticking over, which over time shows up in sleep, digestion, energy and emotional steadiness.
- That is the pressure the habit is answering.
- Remove the habit without touching the pressure and you tend to get a substitute rather than a result, which is why so many people arrive having quit one thing and picked up another.
What does this program actually do?
It helps with the relief-seeking pattern rather than your willpower.
- In a relaxed state, with nothing to retell and no white-knuckling.
- About 20 minutes a day and pressing play.
- Not treatment for a substance use disorder and not a detox program. Where dependence is physical it belongs alongside medical support rather than in place of it.
How the Mindshift Method fits
The Mindshift Method app can be used alongside appropriate medical, psychological or therapeutic care where required.
Naming it properly
Which of These Sounds Most Like What You’re Experiencing?
Eight of them, in plain language. They are not all the same thing, and they do not all need the same kind of support. Here is how to tell the difference, including where this pathway may help and where a doctor or another professional should come first.
- Green · what the sessions are built around
- Amber · may help with part of it, alongside other care
- Red · not the right tool, start elsewhere
-
Drinking more than you meant to
The nightly one that became two. Drinking to take the edge off, and then needing it to feel level rather than to feel good.
If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before you stop. Withdrawal can be dangerous and sometimes needs supervision. Ring the National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline on 1800 250 015. Once that is sorted, the stress and relief pattern is what this program helps with.
-
Smoking and vaping
Physical dependence and a behavioural habit at the same time, which is why stopping one without the other so often comes apart.
The program helps with the reaching and the triggers. Quitline on 13 7848 is free, and combining support beats going it alone.
-
Gambling
A quick escape from stress or feeling that turns into a cycle of relief, regret and mounting pressure, with the financial damage making the stress worse each time round.
Ring Gambling Help on 1800 858 858. It is free and confidential and it also covers the money side, which an audio session cannot. If things feel hopeless, Lifeline is 13 11 14, any hour.
-
Procrastination and not being able to start
Knowing exactly what needs doing, meaning to do it, and finding the day gone. Usually decision fatigue and fear of getting it wrong rather than disinterest.
The program is designed to support the recurring thought and stress patterns around it. If it has been lifelong and comes with the rest of the picture, the ADHD program is the better starting point and it is in the same subscription.
-
Nail biting and other body focused habits
Automatic, tension driven, and usually well underway before you notice you have started.
The tension underneath is the target. Get anything that has broken the skin or damaged a nail bed looked at properly.
-
Eating for reasons that are not hunger
Eating on stress, boredom, reward or the end of a hard day. The sessions focus on everyday emotional and habitual eating patterns. They are not intended to treat an eating disorder.
The program helps with the trigger and the reaching. It is not a weight loss program, it makes no promises about your body, and disordered eating needs a professional rather than an audio session.
-
Phone and screen habits
Picking it up without deciding to, and losing an evening in fifteen minute pieces. The fastest available boost, permanently within reach.
The reaching is what this helps with, and it responds well because there is nothing physical to withdraw from.
-
A short fuse at home
Reacting faster and harder than the moment deserved, then carrying the guilt of it, which makes the next one more likely rather than less.
The regulation side is what the sessions work on. If anyone in your house is frightened of you, that is a different and more urgent conversation, and 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 is the number for it. The relationships program covers the rest.
Two things worth knowing before you pick one. Habits almost never travel alone, and the one costing you the most is not always the one you notice first. And sleep sits underneath all of them, because a short night makes every one of these harder the following day. The sleep program and the stress program are both included in the same subscription, so you are not choosing between them.
You have proved you can stop. The part worth working on is what makes you start again.

Clearing it up
What this is not
Worth being straight about, because it gets confused with all four.
-
Not treatment for addiction or dependency
This does not diagnose, treat or cure anything, and it is not a substitute for medical care or a qualified support service. If you are dependent on something, this sits alongside proper help rather than instead of it.
-
Not willpower training
Nothing here is about gritting your teeth for longer. Willpower is finite by design, and a plan that needs an infinite amount of it was always going to fail somewhere around four in the afternoon.
-
Not a program that shames you
Shame is what keeps most habit loops turning, so using it as a motivator would be working against the point. Nothing in these sessions tells you what is wrong with you.
-
Not talk therapy
There is no session where you explain yourself, and nothing is asked of you. The Mindshift Method does not require you to explain or retell your story during the audio session. The sessions focus on present-day patterns and responses.
This will not suit everyone
Here is who it tends to work for, and who should look elsewhere first.
It tends to suit you if
- You have quit before, more than once, and gone back
- Your hand gets there before your decision does
- Stress or tiredness is what undoes you, not lack of wanting
- You want the pull to fade rather than to be resisted harder
- You would rather not go back over the past to move forward
It probably does not suit you if
- You are physically dependent and need medical support to stop safely
- You want a structured quit program with a counsellor
- You want the cause explored rather than the response changed
- You are not able to give it about 20 minutes most days
- You are in crisis and need help now
If you are physically dependent on alcohol, do not stop abruptly on your own. Withdrawal can be dangerous and needs medical supervision, so talk to your doctor first. Free help in Australia: Quitline 13 7848, Gambling Help Online 1800 858 858, the National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline 1800 250 015, and if things are bad right now, Lifeline 13 11 14. All open all night. This work is designed for the long grind, not for an emergency.
The man behind the MindShift Method
One voice, every session in the library
Rob Edmonds
Strategic Psychotherapist
Accredited practitioner LIC#110226 · ISPA accredited · ASCH member
Rob was nineteen and could not speak in front of a room. Not nervous, genuinely unable, and it was costing him exams. He tried something he had run out of reasons not to try, and a few sessions sorted it. It worked in a way that annoyed him slightly, because it should not have been that straightforward. That quietly shaped everything after it.
He trained at the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney and went on to create Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming, part of the MindShift Method. He writes and voices every session in the library himself, and still sees clients one to one.
Habits, Behaviours and Lifestyle Change FAQs
Will this work if I have quit before and gone back?
Having quit before and gone back is the most common thing we hear, and it is not a mark against you. Most previous attempts ran on willpower, and willpower runs out under stress by design. These sessions are designed to work on the loop underneath, so the change does not depend on you holding the line on a bad day.
Do I have to want to quit, or does part of me not have to be on board?
Nobody arrives fully on board. There is almost always a part that wants out and a part that wants the habit, and pretending otherwise is why so many plans fail in week two. The sessions work on the automatic pull rather than on the argument between those two parts.
What do I do when a craving turns up between sessions?
When a craving turns up between sessions, play something. The 10 Minute Calm Reset is on this page and it is short enough to use in the moment. The aim across the 21 days is the cravings getting less insistent rather than you getting better at white knuckling through them. Whether that happens, and how fast, varies from person to person.
Is this safe if I am physically dependent on alcohol?
Listening to a session is safe. Stopping abruptly on your own is not, and alcohol withdrawal can be genuinely dangerous, so talk to your doctor before you change how much you are drinking. Use this alongside medical support, not instead of it. The National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline is 1800 250 015.
Which session do I use if I have more than one habit?
Start with Break the Habit Loop, which helps with the mechanism rather than a particular substance, then add the specific one. Do not run three at once. One session a day for 21 days, rather than spreading yourself across several at once.
Does it work on procrastination, or only on the substance ones?
Procrastination is the same shape of thing: an automatic move away from discomfort. Start Now, Stop Procrastinating helps with that move. Plenty of people come for the drinking and find the not starting shifts as well.
Is this hypnosis to quit smoking?
Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is not hypnosis. It uses a structured psychological framework aimed at the automatic response, delivered as guided audio. You stay aware and in control the whole way through, and it is designed to sit alongside anything else you already use.
What if I slip up during the seven free nights?
A slip during the free week is not a reason to stop listening, and most people have one. A slip is information about when the pull is strongest, not evidence about you. Keep playing the session the next night and the next.
Will I have to give up the thing entirely?
Whether you give the thing up entirely is your call, not ours, and the sessions do not decide it for you. Some people stop completely and others just want the automatic part gone so it becomes a choice again. Both are legitimate outcomes and the work is the same either way.
