In short

  • Stress, Anxiety and Overthinking is a Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming program from MindShift Mentors.
  • About 20 minutes of guided audio a day, recorded by Rob Edmonds, Strategic Psychotherapist.
  • It helps with the stress response that keeps the mind racing for a lot of people, not the thoughts themselves.
  • Guided audio you listen to. Nothing to practise and nothing to talk through.
  • Not clinical treatment. It does not replace your doctor.

Sound familiar

If your mind will not switch off, you are in the right place

Overthinking is not a character flaw. It is a stress response your nervous system learned, and learned responses can be unlearned.

  • You lie awake at two in the morning replaying conversations or rehearsing tomorrow.
  • Your chest stays tight and your shoulders never quite drop.
  • You cannot sit still without feeling like you have forgotten something.
  • One small decision spirals into hours of weighing every angle.
  • You are calm on the outside and running hot underneath, all day.
  • You snap at the people you love, then lie awake regretting it.
  • You are exhausted and wired at once, too tired to function and too switched on to rest.
  • You have tried to just stop worrying, and it never holds.

Left alone, that loop does not tire itself out. It quietly costs you sleep, focus and the moments you would rather be present for. Most people have already spent years, and a fair bit of money, trying to think their way out of it.

Why nothing has held

You have almost certainly tried most of this already

  • Breathing and meditation apps

They settle you while you are using them. The moment you close the app the same response is still sitting there waiting.

  • Journalling and thought records

Useful for seeing the pattern. Seeing a pattern and changing it are two different jobs.

  • Cutting caffeine, alcohol and screens

Worth doing, and it takes the edge off. It does not touch why the mind starts spinning in the first place.

  • Talking it through

Good for understanding. Plenty of people can explain their anxiety in detail and still cannot stop it at eleven at night.

  • Willpower

You are not arguing with a decision. You are arguing with a response that was laid down long before you thought to question it.

  • Sleeping tablets

They put the body down. The racing mind is usually still there in the morning, and now there is a tablet in the mix as well.

Willpower was never the answer. The pattern lives below conscious thought, which is exactly where these sessions work.

Real people, real stories

What our clients say about all our sessions

Individual experiences vary. Testimonials describe individual experiences and do not guarantee that another person will achieve the same result.

What it actually is

How Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works

Traditional therapy tends to work on the story. This helps with what sits underneath it, where automatic habits and stress responses actually form.

Rob Edmonds explains the method, about six minutes

  1. It skips the conscious chatter

No over analysing and no talking it through. The session goes straight to the automatic response that starts the spin.

  2. Nothing gets relived

You are not asked to go back over past events or rehash how any of it felt. There is nothing to recount.

  3. Nothing to practise in the daytime

Strategic Psychotherapy and behavioural science combined. The whole of it happens while you are listening, so there are no exercises to keep up and nothing to remember during the day.

This program is built around 21 days of listening, one session a day. What people notice, and when, varies a lot. We make no promise about either. If you want the method in full, here is how Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming works.

What is actually happening

Why Can’t You Just Stop Overthinking?

Anxiety and constant worry can have several contributors. Some may be medical, including thyroid problems, medication side effects, heart or gut conditions, and hormonal changes.

Chest tightness, palpitations or persistent stomach problems should be checked by your doctor before you assume stress is the cause.

This section focuses on one possible contributor: a threat response firing when there is nothing to run from.

Many people who cannot stop overthinking assume they lack self-control. That is usually not what is happening. The response driving it is faster than conscious thought and works to keep you safe rather than comfortable. It is not the part you can simply argue with or tell to stop.

Why does my mind race when nothing is actually wrong?

Your alarm system is firing when there is nothing to run from.

  • Fight or flight, wrong trigger. Adrenaline and cortisol prepare you to fight, run or freeze, whether it is a car pulling out or an unanswered email.
  • Logic goes offline. The amygdala overrides logical reasoning while it runs.
  • Repetition makes it faster. Fire it often enough and it goes off sooner, at smaller things.
  • The symptoms are real. Fast heartbeat, tight muscles, no full breath.

Why does my mind go blank in front of people?

The same alarm fires under social pressure, and survival outranks communication.

  • Freezing is involuntary. Not a failure of intelligence or preparation.
  • The fear becomes the trigger. Worrying your voice will shake makes it more likely to.
  • It does not fade on its own. Shyness eases with familiarity. Social anxiety often does the opposite.

Why do I replay the conversation for hours afterwards?

Rumination is not processing. Each pass reinforces the self doubt.

  • What it looks like. Replaying it, fixating on a mistake nobody else noticed, rehearsing the version you should have said.
  • What it costs. Every pass makes the next occasion harder.
  • Avoidance is the quiet version. Relief now, cost later, because the brain never learns it was survivable.

Why is worrying about it as tiring as doing it?

The nervous system treats something vividly imagined much like something real.

  • An hour imagining a hard conversation can leave you as wrung out as having had one.
  • Fight or flight never idles down. Heart rate up, breath shallow, muscles holding tension you stopped noticing.
  • It surfaces in the body. Sleep, digestion, energy, emotional steadiness. Many people arrive here through their body, not their thoughts.

Why does knowing better not switch it off?

You are answering an old emotional imprint. Logic is aimed at the present moment, which is why it keeps missing.

  • "I know I should not be stressed about this, but I still am" is not a contradiction.
  • The unconscious is driving. It stores learned reactions and keeps running them without your say.
  • The imprint can be old. An embarrassment at fourteen can be why a room of adults feels dangerous at forty.

What actually helps?

Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming focuses on recurring learned and automatic responses.

  • Slow the breath. A longer out breath than in breath helps shift you out of fight or flight.
  • Guided relaxation. Lowers muscle tension, heart rate and gut symptoms through the parasympathetic side.
  • Name it. Saying a fear out loud or writing it down takes some of the charge out of it.
  • Watch the caffeine. It adds jitters and restlessness on top.
  • Where CPR fits. CPR focuses on recurring learned and automatic responses using a structured, guided process. It is designed to sit alongside medical advice, counselling and any prescribed treatment rather than replace them.

How the Mindshift Method fits

The Mindshift Method can be used on its own for everyday stress, overthinking and positive behavioural change or alongside counselling, psychological care, medical advice or other appropriate support. It is not intended to replace professional care where that is needed.

Naming it properly

Which of These Sounds Most Like What You’re Experiencing?

Nine common experiences, explained in plain language. They are not all the same, and they do not all need the same kind of support. Here is how to tell the difference, including when this program may help and when another form of support should come first.

  • Green · what the sessions are built around
  • Amber · may help with part of it, alongside other care
  • Red · not the right tool, start elsewhere
  • Persistent anxiety

A state of unease that does not lift, with physical symptoms attached: rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, difficulty breathing normally. The alarm response running when there is nothing to run from.

The program is designed to support the recurring stress, worry and automatic response patterns around this experience.

More on anxiety and what drives it

  • Stress and overwhelm

Too much landing at once, for long enough that it stops feeling like a busy patch and starts feeling like the shape of your life. Work is the most common source and rarely the only one.

The program is designed to support the recurring stress, worry and automatic response patterns around this experience, alongside counselling and medical support rather than instead of them.

  • Overthinking and over-analysing

Turning a decision over long past the point of usefulness, or re-reading a message for tone. The thinking feels productive from the inside and is not moving anything forward.

The program is designed to support the recurring thought and stress patterns around it.

  • Chronic worry

The mind running future scenarios in detail, with the nervous system reacting as though they are already happening. It keeps fight or flight ticking over in the background and shows up in sleep, digestion and energy.

The program is designed to support the recurring stress, worry and automatic response patterns around this experience. If it keeps returning after you have worked on it, that is worth taking to a professional rather than repeating.

    More on chronic worry

  • Social anxiety

Fear of being judged or watched, strong enough to shape what you agree to. Different from shyness in one important way: shyness fades as a situation becomes familiar, and this tends to worsen when it is left alone.

This program helps with the reaction. If it is limiting work, study or relationships, please get professional support alongside it.

More on social anxiety and why you freeze in public

  • The freeze response

Mind blank, voice unsteady, the words gone at the moment you need them. Automatic and involuntary, because the brain has put survival ahead of communication.

The program focuses on the automatic stress response around this experience.

  • Specific phobias

An outsized fear attached to one thing: heights, flying, the dentist, needles, enclosed spaces, driving, public speaking. Often traceable to a single bad experience the brain has filed as a warning.

Rob also works professionally with phobic responses as a qualified Strategic Psychotherapist. Within the self-guided Mindshift Method program, sessions focus on fear, anticipation and automatic responses without requiring forced exposure.

More on phobias, fear of heights and fear of flying

  • Panic attacks

Sudden, intense episodes with strong physical symptoms. We are not going to define these for you, because nothing we have published defines them properly and a landing page is the wrong place to learn what one is.

If you are having them, see your doctor first. This program is designed to support the worry and anticipatory stress that can build between episodes, which is a real and separate problem, and it is not treatment for the attacks themselves.

  • Physical symptoms you are putting down to stress

Chest tightness, palpitations, breathlessness, ongoing stomach trouble. Stress genuinely produces all of these, which is exactly why they get dismissed.

Get these checked by a doctor before you assume they are stress. Several serious conditions present the same way. Once organic causes have been ruled out, the stress side is worth working on and this is built for that part.

Stress and worry cost most people their sleep before they cost them anything else, and the two feed each other. If the nights are the worst part, the Sleep & Recovery program covers that side properly and is included in the same subscription. If you are not sure which of these you have, or whether it is something physical, your doctor is the right first stop and knowing is cheaper than guessing for another year.

If it is the racing, replaying mind you recognise, this is built for that.

Clearing it up

What this is not

Worth being straight about, because it gets confused with all four.

  • Not a meditation app

These are structured guided sessions rather than attention or awareness training. Each session is built to help with one specific response, and the sessions differ from each other because the patterns do.

  • Not talk therapy

There is no session where you explain yourself, and nothing is asked of you. The Mindshift Method does not require you to explain or retell your story during the audio session. The sessions focus on present-day patterns and responses.

  • Not a sleep soundtrack

Sessions are calming and people do fall asleep in them, but the calm is a side effect rather than the product. These are structured guided sessions rather than background sleep sounds or music.

  • Not treatment, and not a diagnosis

This is not clinical treatment and it does not replace your doctor, a psychologist or any medication you are on. It sits alongside them. Plenty of people use it while already seeing someone.

This will not suit everyone

Here is who it tends to work for, and who should look elsewhere first.

It tends to suit you if

  • Your mind will not switch off at night and your sleep has gone with it
  • You know the worrying is not helping and you still cannot stop
  • The same spiral keeps coming back no matter what you try
  • You want something practical without months of talking
  • You would rather not go back over the past to move forward

It probably does not suit you if

  • You want a diagnosis or a clinical assessment
  • You are looking for someone to talk to each week
  • You want the cause explored rather than the response changed
  • You are not able to give it about 20 minutes most days
  • You are in crisis and need help now

If things are bad right now, please do not start with an app. In Australia, Lifeline is on 13 11 14 and the Suicide Call Back Service is on 1300 659 467, both free and both open all night. This work is designed for the long grind, not for an emergency.

Rob Edmonds

Accredited practitioner LIC#110226 · ISPA accredited · ASCH member

Rob was nineteen and could not speak in front of a room. Not nervous, genuinely unable, and it was costing him exams. He tried something he had run out of reasons not to try, and a few sessions sorted it. It worked in a way that annoyed him slightly, because it should not have been that straightforward. That quietly shaped everything after it.

He trained at the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney and went on to create Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming, part of the MindShift Method. He writes and voices every session in the library himself, and still sees clients one to one.

Stress, Anxiety and Overthinking FAQs

Why can I not stop overthinking, even when I know it is not helping?

Overthinking carries on even when you know it is not helping, because knowing is conscious and the overthinking is not. For a lot of people it runs automatically, the same way flinching is automatic. You cannot reason with it for the same reason you cannot reason with a flinch. These sessions help with the response itself rather than what you know about it.

How is this different from a meditation or breathing app?

Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is not a meditation or breathing app. These are structured guided sessions rather than attention or breathing training, and each one is built around a specific recurring response. It is designed to sit alongside anything else you already use.

Will it help if my overthinking is worst at night?

Overthinking at night is what most people find hardest, because there is nothing left to distract them. Most people listen at the end of the day, which is also when the mind is least busy arguing back. If you fall asleep partway through, the session keeps working.

How long before the overthinking actually quietens down?

We cannot tell you, and anyone who gives you a number is guessing. This program is built around 21 days of listening, one session a day. Some people notice changes quickly while others find change develops more gradually. Individual experiences vary. If nothing has shifted by the end of the trial, cancel it. It depends on the person, so there are no guarantees on timing. Consistency is what makes the difference, not effort.

Do I have to talk about what caused the anxiety?

No, you do not have to talk about what caused the anxiety. You never say a word out loud and nothing is asked of you. The method helps with the response that is running now rather than the story behind it, which is why there is nothing to relive and nothing to explain.

Is this hypnosis?

No, Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is not hypnosis. It uses a structured psychological framework aimed at the automatic response, delivered as guided audio. You stay aware and in control the whole way through.

Can I use this while I am seeing a psychologist or taking medication?

Yes, the Mindshift Method can be used while you are seeing a psychologist or taking medication. It sits alongside other therapeutic care, including CBT, and plenty of people use it while already seeing someone. It is a self help support tool, not a substitute for professional care. If you have a diagnosed condition, keep working with your health professional.

What if I fall asleep partway through a session?

Falling asleep partway through a session is fine, particularly when using a sleep session. Nobody has to concentrate for this to do its job.

How does the free trial work, and is there a guarantee?

You get one full session unlocked free for seven nights, and no credit card is needed to start. If you go on to subscribe and it is not right for you, there is a 30 day money back guarantee from your first payment. You can cancel anytime.
