Meditation apps vs the MindShift Method | MindShift Mentors

Headspace, Calm, Insight Timer or the MindShift Method? What's the difference

By Steve Nelson, co-founder of MindShift Mentors.

When I tell people about MindShift, one reply comes up more than any other.

"Why would I pay for that? I can get Insight Timer for free."

Fair question. If we were doing the same thing as Insight Timer, I'd tell you to go and download it. We're not. What sits behind every MindShift program is the MindShift Method, created by my co-founder Rob Edmonds, and it was built for a different job to a meditation app.

The short answer

Headspace, Calm and Insight Timer are mostly built to help you relax, focus or drift off in the moment. You open the app, pick something from a big library, and listen.

The MindShift Method is built to work on the automatic patterns underneath a problem: the thoughts, feelings and reactions that keep repeating. Each program focuses on one issue, like sleep, stress, anxiety or a habit, and you follow it one session a night.

Different jobs. Plenty of people use both.

Why I care about the difference

This isn't theory for me. I spent 35 years as a builder. Long days, a family, a business, and nights where my head wouldn't switch off no matter what I tried. I'd lie there running through the next day's jobs, the money, the lot.

Rob took me through his method, and over time those loops eased. That was my experience. Everyone's is different, which is why we offer a free trial rather than promises. But it's the reason I left building and went all in on this.

Who Rob is and where the method came from

Rob found this work the hard way. At nineteen he couldn't speak in front of a room. Not nervous, unable. He tried hypnotherapy as a last resort, and it made enough of a difference that it changed his career.

Before that he worked in business consultancy and finance, where he kept seeing capable people held back far more by their mindset than their ability. He went on to train at the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney, earning his Diploma of Clinical Hypnosis and Strategic Psychotherapy, along with qualifications in Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The MindShift Method grew out of his years of clinical work with clients. He wanted something short and practical rather than open ended, that works on the response running now instead of going back through what caused it.

How the MindShift Method works

At the heart of the MindShift Method is Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming, or CPR, the approach Rob developed from strategic psychotherapy, clinical hypnosis and NLP.

In practice it looks like this:

  • You choose a program for the issue you want to work on.
  • Each night you lie down, put your headphones on and press play on a guided audio session of around 20 minutes.
  • There's no journalling, no reliving the past, no practising and nothing to say out loud. Your job is to listen.

Rob creates every session himself. The sessions are designed to support the automatic patterns underneath your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, so you're not relying on willpower or trying to think your way out of it. Results vary from person to person.

The MindShift Method is designed to work alongside medical, psychological and other professional care, not instead of it.

What the meditation apps do well

Credit where it's due. These are good apps and millions of people use them.

Insight Timer has a huge free library of guided meditations, talks and music from thousands of teachers around the world, plus a meditation timer. There's an optional paid membership for extra content and features.

Calm is a paid subscription app known for its sleep stories, meditations, breathing exercises and calming music.

Headspace is a paid subscription app focused on guided meditation and mindfulness, with sleep content and short exercises for stress and focus.

If what you're after is ten minutes of quiet at the end of a long day, one of those may be all you need. I mean that.

Where people get stuck

Here's the conversation I have most often. Someone tells me they've been using a meditation app for months. They like it. It helps them settle for a while.

Then 3am rolls around and they're wide awake again, running through tomorrow's list. Or the same worry turns up every Sunday night. Or they're back in the pantry at 9pm even though they promised themselves they wouldn't.

Relaxing can help you feel calmer tonight. Working on why the same thing keeps happening is a different job, and it's not what most meditation content is built for. With a library of thousands of tracks, you're also the one deciding what to play each night, which is one more decision at the end of a day full of them.

When a free app is probably enough

  • You mostly want to unwind, and nothing in particular keeps coming back.
  • You enjoy meditating and like choosing something different each night.
  • You're curious about mindfulness and want to explore at no cost.

If that's you, start with Insight Timer. It's a good place to begin.

When it might be time for something different

  • You've tried meditation apps and the same issue keeps turning up anyway.
  • You can relax for a bit, but the thought loop starts again as soon as the track ends.
  • You'd rather follow a plan than scroll a menu every night.
  • You want something that fits into going to bed, with nothing extra to do during the day.

Can you use both?

Yes. Some people use a meditation app during the day to reset between meetings or after the school run, and play their MindShift session at bedtime. They do different things, so there's no conflict.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's the approach Rob Edmonds created from his clinical work, with Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming at its heart. It's delivered as guided audio programs, each built around one issue, that you listen to lying down.

No. There's no meditation technique to learn and nothing to practise. Each program is a series of guided audio sessions built around one issue.

Because they're doing different jobs. Insight Timer gives you a free library to relax with. A MindShift program is a structured path for one specific issue, created by a qualified practitioner who works with that issue in his clinic. The fairest way to find out if it's worth it for you is to try a session free for 7 nights.

No. The MindShift Method draws on Rob's training in clinical hypnosis, strategic psychotherapy and NLP, but Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming is not hypnosis. You stay aware and in control the whole way through, lying down listening to a guided audio session, and there's nothing you need to do except listen.

No. The method works on the response that's running now rather than going back through what caused it.

No. It's designed to work alongside professional care. If you're seeing someone for your sleep, anxiety or anything else, keep doing that, and let them know you're using it.

Results vary. The programs are designed to be listened to every night, so give it the full 7 nights of the trial before you decide.

The Mindshift Method: Cognitive Pattern Reprogramming

This book breaks down how the mind forms patterns, and why certain responses keep repeating even when you are trying to change them. It introduces the framework behind our work, and how stored patterns can be reshaped rather than just managed at the surface.

  • Why logic alone does not create change
  • How patterns are formed and reinforced over time
  • How guided reprogramming can build new, more useful responses
  • What is actually happening during a Mindshift session
